On October 31, 2024, VANGUARD, represented by Dr. Carlotta Carbone participated in the 24-hour Conference on Global Organised Crime (OC24 2024). Dr. Carbone, a researcher at Transcrime – Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore of Milan, Italy and member of the VANGUARD consortium, specialised in trafficking of human beings (THB), as well as in corruption and collusion in public procurement, took part in a dedicated panel discussion on “The Role of Technology in Combating Organized Crime”. After briefly presenting the VANGUARD project and its objectives, she outlined the initial findings from the desktop and empirical research conducted as part of the project, seeking to untangle the complex dynamics of sex trafficking, labour trafficking, and forced criminality. Moreover, she provided insights to the modular and trustworthy suite of tools being developed in the project for detecting, identifying, investigating, and preventing THB activities facilitated online or taking place at (border) checkpoints. The outcomes of this panel along with the well-rounded discussions throughout the conference, contributed valuable insights to the global endeavours on fighting THB.
