ALIGNER Final Event

On September 26, 2024, Ms. Theoni Spathi, Senior Research Associate at the M4D – Multimodal Data Fusion and Analytics Group (CERTH-ITI) and member of the VANGUARD project coordinating team, participated in the ALIGNER Final Event, which brought together multidisciplinary experts from law enforcement, policymaking, research, and industry. Being specialised in ethics and legal assessment of AI technologies developed for combatting cybercriminal activities, Ms. Spathi participated in a dedicated panel on “Assessing the Implications of AI Technologies for Law Enforcement”, where she highlighted her experience implementing the ALIGNER Fundamental Rights Impact Assessment (FRIA) for the VANGUARD AI technologies, with particular emphasis on the main benefits and challenges in evaluating fundamental rights risks during the development of AI technologies. The event sparked crucial discussions on the implications and potential of AI in the field of law enforcement, examining current practices and approaches to assessing the influence of AI technologies, and presenting a range of research and policy recommendations, thus encouraging future dialogue and relevant assessments.
