Building on the OSCE Office of the Special Representative and Coordinator for Combating Trafficking in Human Beings (OSR/CTHB)’s recent policy brief, “New Frontiers: The Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence to Facilitate Trafficking in Persons,” the OSCE OSR/CTHB, in partnership with the Regional Support Office of the Bali Process (RSO), has launched a new targeted webinar series to explore and address the emerging risks posed by generative AI in the context of trafficking in human beings (THB). This 3-day webinar (22-24.09.2025) brought together experts from civil society, academia, and international organizations to operationalize the recommendations from the policy brief, examine emerging trends at the intersection of AI and trafficking, and discuss how technology may reshape both criminal exploitation and anti-trafficking responses.
VANGUARD Project participated in the first day of the webinar series on the 22nd September 2025, that had a focus on CSO & Academia. Dr. Karen Hough (representing VANGUARD partner FUNDEA) provided critical insights into how the project seeks to strengthen early warning systems, enhance cross-sectoral cooperation, and promote ethical technology development to counter the criminal exploitation of AI. This initiative marks a crucial step in understanding and confronting how advanced technologies are increasingly leveraged by traffickers. The OSCE and RSO will continue this webinar series to deepen engagement, share best practices, and co-develop innovative strategies to address the complex, evolving landscape of technology-facilitated trafficking in persons.
